个人陈述

                                     Personal Statement

I was once so close to United States.  For the first time in my life in 20XX I stepped into U.S. Embassy in Chengdu for a visa interview.  At that time I was less than 15, perhaps one of the youngest F-1 visa applicants in China.  The purpose of applying such visa was to study in a college-preparatory secondary school in U.S.A.  I was awarded a full scholarship including an unconditional admission that covered all my tuition and other expenses in the school. Why would I be able to earn such a hard to won opportunity?

The story begins from when I firstly met this special and lifelong friend – clarinet.  The voice of clarinet sounds very attractive to me: it could be both bright and heavy; it could sometimes be a child’s singing, but sometimes an old man’s speaking.  I fell in love with clarinet at first sight.  Ever since that magic moment, I started to learn how to play the clarinet during my spare time.  The school work for middle school students in China is very heavy.  Like all the other students, I had to spend most of my efforts on school studies.  However, what differentiated me from the majority of the kids was that I spent the rest of time and energy on playing the clarinet rather than taking rest.  Hard work turns out great progress. After a few years’ practicing, my skill has reached a considerably high level as a non-professional player.  I easily obtained the 9th Level Certificate of Clarinet Playing from Sichuan Conservatory.  My skills made me the Deputy Captain of the school’s orchestra, and also the principal clarinet player who handles all the clarinet solos and leading plays.

I have been deeply fascinated by the beauty of music.  Yet, my clarinet tutor, who discovered my music talent and taught me how to turn it into real skills, was not totally satisfied about my performance.  He highly appreciated my talent, and thought I should go as far as I could in music world.  But the music education in common Chinese middle schools is not capable of providing the environment to nurture my thirty in music advancement.  Consequently, my tutor recommended that I should go to USA for advanced studies.  I was so excited about the possible future development in U.S.A. and I started the application process almost immediately.

I chose Idyllwild Arts Academy, one of the best arts high schools in U.S.A. Fortunately, my talent and skill received their assessment as “extremely talented.”  That was how I was awarded the full scholarship and walked into U.S. Embassy.  I was advised by the visa officer at the time to apply when I grow a little bit more and with better English.

For quite some time, I felt like my whole world was in depression because I lost that valuable opportunity to advance in USA.  Retrospectively, I feel much better and stronger now thanks to that visa refusal which turned my maturity to grow much faster.

After that meaningful moment, I gradually realized that music was not everything in my life, so I began to participate in various activities and put my ability other than playing the clarinet into proper use. Because of my leadership and managing skills, I was also elected the President of Student Union, in charge of entertainment and daily affairs.  As the president, I had to make the whole plan and lead my teammates to successfully work on various projects involving music, sports and community services.

At my teacher’s request, I have been in charge of the whole coordination and budgetary control.   These experiences of working as the Student Union President and in charge of budgetary planning have made me fully confident about my ability of management and communicating with peoples.  As my interests in management grow stronger, I felt that I can have many opportunities in many fields to be successful.

In the meantime, by expanding my view out of music playing, my understanding of music has also become much deeper and much more realistic.  I used to think that playing music was everything of music, but gradually I realized that, in our modern life, the role of music in our society was also a very interesting issue.

We are now in an age of information and commerce.  Our time requires people to improve their quality by learning music.

My talent in clarinet playing has given me a deep understanding of music itself.  In the meantime, my communication ability is also a positive factor for me to set my foot in music education field.  Combined with my music talent and leadership, I feel strongly that I am uniquely suited for your undergraduate program of Music Education as the first step of working for my future.  Additionally, as a man who wants to bring the Western music to the Chinese people, I have a special need to be in your undergraduate program of Music Education so that I can render my services to my country once graduated from your school to expand music of all kinds that are good for the ear and soul to Chinese people.

Thank you very much for your kind consideration!

Dear Sir or Madam,

My student Mr. XXX is applying to your university’s undergraduate program in Music Education.  As his High School teacher in charge of his class, I’m writing this letter to assist you in assess his potential admission into your university.

XXX entered our Chengdu Municipal No.XX High School, one of the most recognized top quality high schools in the city of Chengdu.  The admission into this school is very competitive and students’ academic achievements must reach certain threshold for admission.  XXX was invited as a special privilege into our school without any normal admission requirements thanks to his outstanding academic skills and talents in clarinet playing.  Prior to meet XXX in person, I anticipated him to be the kind of quiet and introversive student with music talent at first.  But when I met him in person he really surprised me pleasantly.

First of all, XXX quickly became the most active member in our class.  He was very concentrated, eager to participate in class discussions. I have heard from many teachers that, when they needed someone to answer questions or lead a discussion, XXX was always their first choice.  He has shown very wide interests in many subjects.  XXX is very engaging in discussions or conversations in which people would always feel his talents, sense of humor and sincerity.  XXXX is one of the most popular students in our school with his great leadership skills and his respect to other people.  Furthermore, XXX genuinely shows his talents in organizational and management skills.

He is the class leader for financial management and activities organization. Needless to day, he also serves as the captain of school orchestra and chairman of students’ union. He has successfully organized some concerts and other activities in our school. He has proved him superior to be a leader and a manager to many high school students.

Therefore, based on my first hand knowledge about XXX, I strongly recommend him to your university to study Music Education.  I would appreciate very your favorable review of him. Thank you!

Very truly yours

Dear Sir or Madam,

As a professor specialized in clarinet with over 20 years’ experience at Sichuan Conservatory of P.R.C., I take great pleasure to introduce to you Mr. XXX, one of my outstanding gifted students. I have known XXX since he was in elementary school and witnessed his great progress in music and personal developments.

At a tender age of 9 when he initially studied clarinet, XXX not only showed his musical talents but also his determination to succeed as well.  XXX attended the elementary clarinet class under tremendous pressures created by the traditionally infamous heavy load of homework for Chinese school kids.  As a result, XXX, like many other elementary school beginners, could only use their evening time and weekends to study clarinet.  Giving up kids’ only available playtime for music study is not an easy thing to do.  Understandably, many kids dropped out of the class either because they did not like clarinet in the first place or they could not find time to do so.  Yet, every time I went into the classroom with ever dwindling students I saw XXX’s sparkling eyes that convey unquestionably his genuine interests in music and clarinet

As I expected, XXX greatly distinguished himself from other students. His improvement was so fast that only after two years he showed his skills that few clarinet players can achieve at his age.  By that time, XXX stands out to be one of my most favorite students, and I was very confident about his potential in music.  As demands on his attention for other academic courses grow when he entered into middle school, XXX became one of my private tutored students.  His clarinet skills developed so smoothly and overwhelmingly.  Right after he finished middle school, XXX was awarded a full scholarship thanks to his music talents by Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where I believe that XXX could obtain advanced progress in music and professional clarinet development in particular.  Unfortunately, because of his younger age, XXX’s visa application was turned down.

I like XXX not only because of his music gift, but also his great personality. Unlike most of my students, XXX not only have his devotion to music, but he also has very wide interests in life.  He is a great communicator with a born gift of leadership.

He always attracts his schoolmates around him with his leadership skills, kindness and fun spirits.  I am fully confident about XXX’s future in whatever field he may chose because he is such a talented, smart, warm-hearted and fun human being.  Accordingly, I strongly recommend XXX to your university.

I hope this letter will help you to evaluate XXX for his highly sought after admission into your fine university.  Please feel free to contact me if you need further assistance.

Yours Sincerely,

XX
