There is a saying in China about high school students – “Thousands upon thousands running on one Single-plank Bridge”. That is because the university selection system is very strict, for the capacity of universities in China is far from enough to contain all the high school students who want to enter colleges, especially the top colleges in China. Fortunately, upon my excellent academic performance, I attended one of the best middle schools in our province. It’s been famous over several decades for its first-class facility, excellent faculty, and most of all, high college-entered-student rate. So it is imaginable how severe the competition is and how heavy the student’s pressure is in such a school. Usually, our daily study begins at 7:15 a.m., and will not end until 11:00 p.m.

In an atmosphere like this, working for a high score on the college entrance exam is the biggest, or even the only, aim for us. The youngsters at their 10’s are bearing too much for their age. Most of times, students are like separate islands on campus, closed to their own domains only minding their own studies. However, I’m not one of these islands. I seldom feel troubles to cope with my study. Such an intense and painful struggle for others never pressed me a lot. I am confident to be admitted by any one of the top 10 universities in China like Peking and Tsinghua University. On the other side, I believe in enjoying life, making friends, and trying every possibility. Therefore, I believe in school as a community but not just a college-preparatory-factory. I try my best to develop my dimension as wide as possible, instead of limiting my sight only within the studies.

Art is my first choice. Chinese traditional art is introspective and abstruse. I began to learn calligraphy, what is called one of our national skills, when I was little. And through all these years, no matter how busy or occupied, I kept practicing it. Calligraphy is not like ordinary writing. The brush, ink, inkstone and rice paper are all tailor-made for calligraphy. But these are just surfaces, the essence of calligraphy lies in its artistic conception and the frame of mind. Every time practicing calligraphy, I feel like being placed into a quiet and beautiful scene with a hill full of trees, a creek full of swimming creatures, and a bank covered by green grass. It’s a genuine ease from daily life’s intensity and pressure. However, western art is a little different. Piano is another hobby of mine, which I have attained a considerably great skill as a non-professional player through years’ hard practice. It’s much more passionate and open than calligraphy. As a piano-player, your sensibility shows on both the music you play and yourself. It releases all your feelings out. No matter oriental or western, art makes my mind open to the beauty of life.

I also bring my positivity into school life. Being the class monitor, I feel it’s my responsibility to bring pleasure and enthusiasm to my classmates. So I try opportunity to organize class activities to get everybody a relaxation from their heavy course works. There was one time our class was going to run an open educational seminar to the school and even some guests from other schools. After a careful discussion, we decided to run a debate for the seminar. I took charge of the against side. At first, the enthusiasm of the majority was not very strong; they thought the whole debate was just the few debaters’ business. In order to get more classmates to participate in this activity, I recruited more teammates than just the debaters we needed. I assigned everybody a job. I let those who are extroversive and easy to get along with do the contacting jobs, including contacting for the site and equipment the seminar needed and the propaganda for the seminar; those thoughtful and creative ones make our debate plan and speech draft; and those well-read and computer proficient gather information from book and internet. Finally, almost half the class took part in the preparation of the debate, and we worked as a concerted machine. The strength of group showed its power during the debate. We overwhelmed our opponents. Not only I, the leading debater, but also everyone was cheered by participating in the debate. I was so delighted to see my classmates have gained such pleasure from their schooling.

By next June, I will graduate from high school. This is a crossroad for my future. I know the choice I made for my undergraduate plan will be crucial for my future development. The reason I choose your university as my desired aim is mainly based on two points. First of all, I plan to study chemistry in your university. Though I have done well in all subjects in high school, chemistry has always been my most favorite one. It’s a vibrant and flexible subject as the central science to numerous natural fields and areas. I hope to work on the issue of settling the problem of environmental pollution from chemical industry, or the development of chemical apparatus for industry use. For both of them, Chemistry is a very important basic science, which is especially indispensable for the field of environment. Moreover, our globe has been damaged seriously nowadays and environmental problems have become global task. For a developing country, to improve our ecologic conditions and protect our environment better is even more urgent. We should care more about reducing environment deterioration when put great efforts on economic and industrial development. Therefore, Chemistry is absolutely a core discipline to our environmental protection. If I can study this major well in undergraduate period, I believe it will be much beneficial for me no matter for continuing my study to graduate level or entering the field of environment protection to work.

Secondly, I believe your undergraduate program in this major could be a suitable start for my goal. Like I always do, I also prefer your university’s circumstance as a campus community. The international and multi-cultural atmosphere can greatly broaden my view. Also, as the most developed country, USA must have abundant professional technology and advanced experimental equipments, which are more progressing than China, so American universities are perfect domains to study chemistry and to research the environment problems. And meanwhile, I can also contribute to this community a lot with my ability and especially my Chinese traditional characters. I’m eager to put my piano talent into use in any kinds of bands, music shows or parties. And I’m very willing to show my special calligraphy skill to Americans and people around the world. And also I’m going to join various activities such as badminton, drama, debate and speech. I’m looking forward to both receiving and contributing a lot in your university.

Ever since I was sensible to my life, I always remembered traveling everywhere with my parents. My young memory was full of colorful things met in journeys. However, in all of those wonderful experiences, things distinctly embedded in my heart are hotels where I have stayed. It seemed that I have an inherent kind of fondness to the diversified styles and atmosphere of different hotels. I am spontaneously curious to things in hotels. The splendid and fine upholstery in every different hotel extremely captivated my heart. Living in hotel was one of the most favorite things for me. Gradually, my parents found that I often have all kinds of strange questions about hotels and they often patiently make clear my doubts. My father told me that to manage a hotel is not an easy thing but a complicated skill which needs much professional knowledge. From then on, I was shaped a concept that operating a hotel is a kind of profound business and to work in a hotel would be a great career. Maybe, my childish dream to be a hotel administrator was hatched at that time.

Along with my growing up, I have a deeper interest and more mature perspective to hotels. Hotel is a special place where many different people converge together to deal with their private business. It is just like a small village. All the strangers become provisional neighbors in several days in a strange place but hotel is not a place just for sleeping and eating; it’s a small multifunctional community for all tenants and must provide various services to its customers for their convenience. Later, I was involuntarily to pay more attention to things relative to hotels. From all kinds of books, magazines and other channels, I studied more and more information in this field and found a small hotel actually included intensive learning. Hotel management is advanced business affair but not a simple way of providing food and boarding for guests. The more I know about hotels, the deeper I want to set foot in this field. Hotel industry is much more complicated and sophisticated than I thought. I gradually understand an excellent hotel is not a simple blending work of advanced equipment and elegant upholstery. For a really superior hotel, excellent hardware---facilities are not enough; the more important should be its software---ideas of its management and operation. In my point of view, a hotel actually represents a kind of culture and this kind of culture must represent the spirit of a hotel, which includes a hotel’s features, styles, characteristics and uniqueness.

In today’s China, hotel has become one of the most important windows for foreigners. Following the policies of reform and opening in China, our hotel business has been improved greatly. However, according to my view, we still have many things deficient and undeveloped. Because of the fast development of information and technology, the renovation of equipments and facilities gradually catch up the steps of developed countries, but sharp contradictions appeared between the demand and the supply of hotel administrators. Personnel’s progress is not as easy as the renewal of technology. A person’s knowledge and thoughts cannot be improved greatly just in a few of months or even in several years. To cultivate a qualified professional needs long-term and excellent education.

Therefore, according to my country’s actual situation, we urgently require a large number of professional administrators in the field of hotel management. Actually, China has numerous people who are good at management, but few of them really understand the management in hotel. Most of professionals who understand Business Administration, Administration Management or Enterprise Administration actually cannot take the task of hotel management. Hotel management has its own special characters and uniqueness. It has close connection with many other fields such as customers’ psychology, tourism and marketing. Therefore, the fact is that we do not lack administrators but being short of outstanding managers in the field of hotel management. Therefore, for China, a group of qualified professionals in hotel administration are really necessary. And for myself, it’s the appropriate time to study hotel administration in the undergraduate period. Undergraduate study is the important time for a person to ground a solid basis for one’s future development. After establish a firm foundation, I will have a better preparation for my graduate study and then it will much easier for me to develop my future career.

My parents also support my plan positively. In order to let me touch the outside world earlier, they arranged me to travel in US so as to experience a completely different life style independently. In the summer of 20XX, I studied in America for a short period of time. That travel gave me a very special memory. When I arrived at the beautiful seashore in California’s sunny August, I was deeply moved by its golden sand beach, blue ocean, lovely seals, cute squirrel, and clumsy turtle. This is the first time I feel so close to the nature. Such a harmonious picture is my first impression to USA. I hope my homeland will be so wonderful one day! In California, I recognized my host family which is a typical ordinary American family. They are not very rich, but they live a very happy life. They started their working at 4 o’clock every morning and spent a very busy day till the 10 pm every night, but the sunny smile always appeared on their tired faces. Each weekend, all family members come to the beach together or go camping to enjoy a happy holiday. I deeply felt their optimistic, enthusiastic, diligent and active altitude to their life. I was surprised very much by their fortitude when faced difficulty and hardship. That ordinary family really taught me much. I studied many things different from what I learnt in domestic education. Upon those special experiences in US, I was attracted greatly by American culture and characters. I am curious what impetus support American people to keep such an excellent psychological status. What is the real American spirit?

Consequently, after came back from the US, an idea sprouted in my mind. I hope to get an opportunity to study in America. Among various excellent universities in America, I catch the fancy of University of XXXX---the world’s greatest hospitality and tourism laboratory. I like her very much, because she is the one most suitable for me. Her Harrah Hotel College provides a wide range of choices in my interesting academic field. Especially the hotel management department offers complete courses which are pointed to what I exactly want to study such as hotel operations, human resources and so on. Lying in XXX, the world famous City of Gaming, the university can provide us plenty of opportunities to experience, to learn and to absorb much precious first-hand knowledge. Just like what the Harrah’s dean tell us that students in the college are exposed to the breadth of the hospitality and leisure services industry while they are also given the opportunity to specialize in an area of interest. I hope to touch the front-line of the hotel industry, so I believe that to study in University of Nevada-Las Vegas must be a perfect choice for my future development!

Dear Sir or Madam,

At the request of XX, my current student in Chengdu XX Middle School, I’m providing this reference, which I hope can be useful for you to review her application to your undergraduate program.

I have been the Chinese teacher and class director in Chengdu XX Middle School for about ten years. We are one of the most famous and high-quality middle schools in the whole city, the faculties in our school are all renowned and highly-experienced. Though I’m relatively young in the school, I have lots of experience in Chinese teaching and student managing. I have been titled the outstanding young teacher and class-director by school and city.

Yun came to my class in September 20XX, the semester she entered our school. I became her Chinese teacher, as well as class director, since then. The difference between the class directors and other teachers is that, we have the duty to manage the class, both the studying affairs and students’ living affairs. We are like a bridge between the students and the school, their parents and the school, and the students and teachers. So we have to know every student in our class very clearly. For this reason, I have more chances to contact XX and know her better than other teachers do. Managing students is not an easy job, so the student cadres always play an important part in class. As the monitor, XX contributes a lot to the class. I gave her the authority to manage all the student activities. I was assured about her ability to do the coordinating and organizing jobs.

Once we were about to take part in our school’s drama festival. We were supposed to play a Chinese traditional drama – Tea Shop. I analyzed some key plots and roles of this drama to my students, and then left all the other works to their own. XX was in charge of the directing and casting. It was not an easy job as it may sound. The enthusiasm made everybody ask for the leading roles, but no one was willing to take these minor ones. So XX decided to run an audition. Combined the performance in the audition and students’ actual characteristics, XX assigned everyone the most suitable role. And then, she divided the crew into several groups. Different groups rehearsed in different places at the same time. And the leading actors were the strings to connect these groups into a collectivity. Through this way, it saved lots of time, which was the scarcest thing to middle school students, to get everybody into his role. And before the final performance, she just needed to call all the actors together for a preview for once or twice. She has done even better than I had expected.

Another time was in a seminar, we ran a debate competition about teacher’s professional ethics. XX was the leading debater of the against side. During the debate, she showed her wide knowledge and eloquence. She used lots of proverbs, history figures and examples to support her stand, and every word of her was incisive to get to the point, and also full of humors. Her performance won both her teammates and opponents’ admiration.

Her positivity and versatility also can be found in many other aspects. She is ours school’s famous piano player who is always invited to play in many occasions. She knows the traditional skill of calligraphy writing, which she has been practicing from very small. During weekends or vacations, the “Holiday Working Team” she leads can always be found doing many community services. Normally, in order to get more students to participate in class’s management, the student cadre will change every semester or two, by student vote. But XX has won all the elections by now, so she continued to be the monitor from the beginning of our class to today, and very likely to the graduation. All her classmates have approbated her ability, characteristics and performance. She is already a model in the class.

In this reference, I didn’t mention much about XX’s grade, which I believe you can easily find was so outstanding from her transcripts and her ranking (5th out of 860 students), because I’d like to give you something that you cannot find from these documents but I think is equally important to contribute to her excellence. I do hope, according to my recommendation, you could give her a favorable review. Thank you! Please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely Yours

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am the English teacher of Ms. XX during her high school period. I have known her since September 20XX. My familiarity with Ms. XX is both in the class and the daily contacts after classes. She was my most favorite student in the past two years. Considering that she is seriously planning her undergraduate study in your university, I feel it is not only my pleasure but also my duty to write this letter to you, providing some information about her to facilitate your evaluation.

Ms. XX is unquestionably one of the most excellent students in the class. Her overall grade of all subjects ranks 2% among the students in the same grade. And her English is probably the best among all the 860 students. Words, the basis of learning English, is always a big problem for most high school students, to whom enlarging their vocabulary by memorizing the words one by one is a painful work. But Ms. XX showed her special skill to do this. It seems that she has got the biggest vocabulary in the class but in the most comfortable manner. I talked with her about the way of doing this. She mentioned two key points: one was that she didn’t just use the English-Chinese dictionaries to memorize the word like others did, but instead she always made clear of a word’s meaning by its English explanation, which helped to get a much deeper understanding to the word; the other one was that she preferred reading books to memorizing dictionaries, because by reading books she could also get a clear view of both the meaning and the use of words. I was glad to find that she has got her own way to learn English. I recommend her method to the class, but unfortunately, not many students had such patience and perception to do it this way.

With a solid basis on words, Ms. XX showed superior progress in grammar and texts studying. Her big vocabulary and wide reading enabled her to do well in all listening, speaking, reading and writing. During our classes, from time to time we would act some scenes in the textbook. Most students were just reciting the dialogues in the book, but Ms. XX used her own words through all the talks. Her unprepared but fluent speaking impressed me very strongly. So when the chance of English Speech Contest that was held by China Central TV Station came up, I gave the quota to Ms. XX without any hesitation. In this nationwide contest, she faced many top high school students from all over the country. By competing and communicating with these players, I believe she has gained much from this experience. I saw her final on TV, her confident and brilliant speech made me so proud to be her teacher.

My knowledge to Ms. XX can be summed up to three words: positive, creative and industrious. I have been to U.S.A. for a cultural exchange program in Feb. 20XX. I was invited to visit some schools and universities there. I definitely know what kind of students U.S. universities are seeking, and I believe Ms. XX is just one of these students. I recommend her to your university without any reservation.

Faithfully Yours

Dear sir/madam:

I take the pleasure to write this letter of reference for my intelligent student, XX. She is not only diligent but also good moral in our school. I will be very glad if my recommendation can help your evaluation of her capability.

I am the headmaster of the Chengdu XX Middle School, which is a national key middle school in China .In recent years, the 100 percent graduates from our school have been enrolled by university, and in addition, 80% graduates in our school have been recruited by national key university. I got to know her as a student of our school. She has been keeping a good balance between the arts and sciences, gaining high grades in each of them. Because of her diligent studying, she was titled several times “exemplary student” “excellent student cadres” “various abilities in a major”. More importantly, she owns the industriousness and inquisitiveness in learning, and an unusual ability of abstract and analytical thinking and in-depth exploration of knowledge. Due to her outstanding performance in studying, in every semester, her ranking grade never fell down below top 5 in her grade.

At the same time, in the social field, she manifests her powerful leader and organization capacity. Presently, these positions, she has been taking in charge of in our school, the monitor of her class, the director of the youth volunteer of environmental protection association. Moreover, she has various hobbies for example, playing the piano and Chinese calligraphy. As an editor in our school magazine, her peculiar points of view, fine style of writing, sense of humor often compose an excellent article. She has issued many excellent essays in school magazine. Her remarkable talent was appreciated by her teachers and schoolmates. Especially, in May, 20XX, she won the title of Excellent Work in Chengdu 10th Xinmiao Cup Calligraphy Competition. This contest adequately shows her talent in art. Otherwise, she took actively part in all kinds of the social activities in her vacation, such as offering care to the olds in old people’s home, and leading various kinds of community service as a youth volunteer for propagating the theory of environmental protection in the street and cleaning the mother river of this city and etc. All these activities constantly improve her social practice ability.

Finally, I honestly recommend her to you, with the hope that she can get the best chance to develop her enthusiasm as well as talents in your first-class university as to make her internationalization intellectual. I will highly appreciate your favorable consideration of her application. Please feel free to contact me if there’s any further information you need.

Sincerely yours,
