Personal Statement
With the policy of opening and reformation operating from the early 1980s, China began to stride on her way of fast development. As a girl born in the mid 1980s, I was fortunately experienced all the immense changes happened in Chinese people’s life. Eighteen years’ witness has virtually influenced and formed my life destination. As a student who is determined to grow into a successful businesswoman, I feel greatly encouraged by the prospects of China’s economy status today. China’s economic development is bound to provide crucial opportunities for us to make important theoretical contributions to researching and advancing Chinese economy in particular and to that of the world economy as a whole.
My desire of studying business is not only stimulated by the macroscopical environment of China’s prosperous economic development. Every one’s physiology of life must be deeply influenced by his living surroundings. My parents both work as enterprise administrators. My father is the manager who preside a large-scaled chain restaurant in my city. My mother works as a financial manager in an industrial corporation; consequently, they gave me much in the formation of my life direction and influenced me greatly in the shaping of my career objective.
Aside from my family’s effects, my personal experience is also the strong incentive pushing me to settle down my interested academic area. I would never forget the impressive trip to South Africa, a place which is harassed by poverty, disease, violence and hunger. I was deeply stricken by what I saw when first stepped on the country’s land. It’s really a great shock when such a vivid scene of backwardness appeared in front of my eyes. Countless shabby houses made of iron sheet stand by two sides of road one by one in the burning sunshine. Tramps and black children wander in the street, while the rich’s limousines fly by them. Such a sarcastic and sharp contrast strongly impacts my heart and reminds me of my own life. I was ashamed very much at that time. Since I was born, my parents have been giving me a relaxing and affluent life. Poor conditions in South Africa are too far beyond to me. African people‘s misery and want intensely surprised me. From then on, I was completely changed of my life philosophy. I hope to improve poor people’s living conditions and quality through my endeavor and want to help the weak with my capacity. Hence, after came back from South African, African people’s suffering and undeveloped status haunted in my deep heart for long time. At the same time, America occurred to me, the most advanced country on the earth. I was curious how America stood up so fast from the Great Depression in the 1920s, which was almost fatal to the whole nation’s economy. What makes American people get out of that huge economic disaster in just several decades and captured the top seat in today’s world economic field?
Grateful to my family’s support, in 2003, I participated in a summer camp in USA. In that summer, I was profoundly exposed to the real American spirit. When I arrived at the beautiful seashore in California’s sunny August, I was deeply moved by its golden sand beach, blue ocean, lovely seals, cute squirrel, and clumsy turtle. This is the first time I feel so close to the nature. Such a harmonious picture is my first impression to USA. I hope my homeland will be so wonderful one day! In California, I recognized my host family which is a typical ordinary American family. They are not very rich, but they live a very happy life. They started their working at 4 o’clock every morning and spent a very busy day till the 10 pm every night, but the sunny smile always appeared on their tired faces. Each weekend, all family members come to the beach together or go camping to enjoy a happy holiday. I deeply felt their optimistic, enthusiastic, diligent and active altitude to their life. I was surprised very much by their fortitude when faced difficulty and hardship. That ordinary family really taught me much. I studied many things different from what I learnt in domestic education. Upon those special experiences in US, I was attracted greatly by American culture and characters. I am curious what impetus support American people to keep such an excellent psychological status. No matter in the colorful daily life or in the relaxing school time, I was deeply surrounded by the American spirit.
There, I completely experienced the words what my teacher told me---USA is a country full of freedom and democracy where nothing is impossible. This is undoubtedly a precious opportunity for me to experience the life of a developed country that possessed the most advanced economy in the world. In that trip, I have visited many cities where I experienced much benefit brought by the advanced economy. I deeply understood how important for a country to develop economy. USA is the absolute global economic center which always provided variety of challenges and stimulus for talented persons. If only you strive and pay out, opportunities will appear in front of everyone who is diligent.
Comparing South Africa, USA and China, I deeply felt people are so different in this world. I am fortunate that I live in a prosperous developing country and my parents give me a happy family and meanwhile also sympathetic to those poor Africans who struggle for their basic existence all day and all night. While, the trip in America reminds me that there must be many things that we need to learn from USA and her superior higher education. I want to be a unique person who bears both the oriental and occidental cultural characteristics harmoniously as a whole. Therefore, I prepared myself well at this time to accept a kind of orthodox western education after successfully finished the best secondary education in China. Several years later, I hope to exert all what I studied in and out of my country to serve for my country, for those who need help in the world and for all whom I can do any changes or improvements for.

It’s my great pleasure to write her recommendation letter to you for my student, Miss Li xxx. As the head teacher of her class, I have many opportunities to observe her. Here, I’d like to share some of my findings on her with you.
I have known Miss Li xxx for more than two and a half years. Frankly speaking, she wasn’t so conspicuous at the very moment of her entry to our school, for she appeared to be common among a large group of excellent students coming from all over Chengdu. However, my view changed as time went by. I gradually found that she was such a nice girl who developed herself in all aspects. Her good performance in study and active participation in extracurricular activities impresses me greatly.
In class, Miss Li is always attentive and inquisitive. She is not that kind of persond who tend to receive anything passively. Instead, she is apt at active and logic thoughts. I can always find her an active question raiser and discussion participator during my class. In addition, she demonstrates an unusual spirit of persistence in learning new knowledge. Due to her good study habit I mentioned above, her academic study have kept progressing in spite of the fierce competition in our school, one of the three most prestigious schools in Chengdu.
During her energetic participation in the out-of-class activities, Miss Li shows great potentials in many groups such as our school publishing house, singing teams and reading group. What’s more commendable is her talent in leadership manifested in her organizing the students to take part in those activities. Now, I’m quite grateful to her, because her excellent performance on her duties always proves a great help for my management of the class.
In retrospect, Miss Li’s excellent performance in her high school life proves her the most versatile student in our class. What’s more important, she has successfully struck a balance between her study and working. I, therefore, would like to recommend Miss Li xxx to you without reservation. Firstly, I would say this is my great favorite to recommend one of the most excellent students of mine, Li xxx, to apply to the esteemed undergraduate program at your university. As a Mathematic teacher in a local key middle school, I have taught hundreds of students, among whom, excellent ones are countless. However, when Li xxx was recommended to our school in 2002, I was still impressed very much by her excellent academic results in Mathematics. Later, Miss Li was arranged in my class and I have more opportunities to know her.
According to my personal observation of her, Li, xxx is a mature and independent girl not only in her academic but also in moral and social aspects. When she was in elementary school, she has established a stable basis for her study. She has won the 2nd Prize of Hualuogeng Mathematics competition which is a very important nationwide competition and also her most interested thing is to study various mathematic problems. Therefore, I am not curious that she always studied more relaxing and easier than the other students, additionally, her efficiency of study is always one of the best in my class. Moreover, she likes to think different possibility of a math problem and always try to solve a problem through diversified ways. She told me that she could find a euphoria when found a new way to settle a math problem. In the process of thinking and researching, she said that he could cultivate her creativity and initiative. Those words often resound in my heart; I am really surprise with a high school girl with such an initiative in study.
As well as her superior academic ability, Li xxx has all kinds of interests and hobbies. One of her best-love activities is the game of Chinese Chess. This is one of the most difficult and sophisticated games even for most of adults. A person, who is good at chess, must have a superior feeling and ability of logic. In my point of view, Li xxx’s gift in mathematics is much beneficial from her playing chess. Besides activity related to sciences courses, Miss Li is still very excellent in other activities such as singing, watching sport games especially tennis etc.. In addition to the heavy study tasks, she took many roles in various organizations of our school and participated in many social activities such as travel, communicating with different people or visiting the old in rest home. To sum up, this student is really one of the few in my teaching career who developed so comprehensively.
Conclusively, according to my teaching and contacting with her in these years, I am confident that Li xxx is a very promising girl.
